Who Can Join?
The Sons of the American Revolution is a hereditary society. Membership is open to men who can document direct lineal descent from a patriot who supported the cause of American independence during the Revolutionary era. If you are not yet sure whether you have a qualifying ancestor, our chapter can help you begin that search.
Why Join CFLSAR?
Joining the Central Florida Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution is about more than lineage alone. It is a way to recognize your family’s connection to the founding of our nation, honoring the Patriot in your ancestry, and helping ensure that their service and sacrifice continue to be remembered. Membership also helps preserve that legacy for future generations of your family. The SAR is built on patriotism, service, and education. Through chapter meetings and activities, members enjoy fellowship, community involvement, ceremonial participation, and opportunities to learn more about Revolutionary War history and the principles on which our country was founded.
How the Process Works:
~Step 1: Submit your preliminary “Lineage Exploration Form” below.
~Step 2: Our Chapter Genealogist and/or Registrar reviews your family information and lineage.
~Step 3: We contact you, and if eligible, we help guide you through the formal application and ensuing steps.
Start Your Preliminary Lineage Review:
Please click on the button below and complete the short form to begin. This is not a formal membership application. It is an initial review to help determine whether a documented patriotic line may exist.
Frequently Asked Questions:
What is the SAR?
The Sons of the American Revolution is a hereditary, patriotic, educational, and historical organization. It honors the service and sacrifice of those who supported the cause of American independence and works to preserve that legacy for future generations.
Do I need to already know my patriot ancestor?
No. You do not need to already know your qualifying patriot ancestor to begin. Our chapter can review the family information you provide and help determine whether a possible qualifying patriotic line may exist.
What if a family member was already in SAR or DAR?
That can be very helpful. If a parent, grandparent, or other close relative has already proven a qualifying line through the SAR or DAR, that prior work may help shorten the research and application process.
What kinds of patriots qualify?
A qualifying patriot ancestor may have provided military, civil, or patriotic service in support of American independence. Not every qualifying ancestor served as a soldier. In some cases, public service, oath-based service, or other documented support to the Revolutionary cause may also qualify.
How long does the process take?
It depends on the information available and how much prior family research has already been done. Some preliminary reviews may move quickly, while others require additional research and documentation. As a rough estimate, it could take a few weeks at best, or a few months for more complex applications. A chapter representative will communicate and follow up with you along the way.
What does membership cost?
Formal SAR application fees and dues vary based on national, state, and chapter amounts. If a qualifying line appears likely, we will discuss the current fees and next steps with you before moving forward.
Is this form the formal membership application?
No. This is only a preliminary lineage review. It helps our chapter determine whether a documented qualifying patriotic line may exist before beginning the formal application process.
Can my children or other descendants join at the same time or join later?
Yes! Once a qualifying line is properly documented, that family lineage may help future eligible descendants pursue membership as well, subject to SAR membership requirements in place at that time.
